Is Wal-Mart Hiring?

PART FOUR OF SIX

“Follow me,” Jesus said. We must resolve to follow the example and teachings of Jesus Christ.

My good friend and favorite preacher Jerry Vineyard likes to sometimes say, “Wearing a blue shirt and khakis into Wal-Mart doesn’t make you an employee.” I could look the part and fool customers and even other employees, but I cannot fool the employer. The boss at Wal-Mart does not know who I am. He or she is not going to give me a paycheck at the end of the week.

We have to do more than just outwardly call ourselves a follower of Christ. We must have a relationship with him. We must know him better through our prayer life. We must know him better by getting our nose into the Word. We must follow Him even when no one is looking.

Verse 26 in Luke 9 says, “For whoever is ashamed of me and my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.” It is important to note that a large part of following Christ is acknowledging Him as Lord to mankind; to testify of Him and live and speak the gospel. It should be evident to everyone we come in contact with who we are in Christ and whose we are.

The first two resolutions, self-denial and bearing one’s cross are futile unless we follow Jesus. These things would only be done for Christ’s sake. Following Jesus, put simply, is trying to become a little more like Him every day. Being like Jesus is a target to shoot for that can never be reached, but nonetheless, the most worthy endeavor a man can ever undertake.

By striving to be like Christ, I will assuredly fail. After I fail, I will learn from it, let God refine me, and pick myself up, dust myself off, and try to imitate Him again. For although the cost is great, I know there is no other way for me than to follow Jesus today.

In John 6:67, Jesus asked the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” He asked because some of His other disciples quit following him. Peter answered, “To whom shall we go?” There is no one else who leads people to eternal life and fellowship with God. Once we know this, we have to resolve to follow the example and teachings of Jesus the very best we can.

Does the Boss know you?

Just for today, resolve to follow the example and teachings of Jesus the very best you can.

Tune in tomorrow for Part Five…..
